M SERGIUS SILUS BROCKAGE DENARIUS – NEAT ANCIENT STRIKING ERROR – FINE NGC GRADED ROMAN REPUBLICAN COIN (Inv. 14622)
ROMAN REPUBLIC. M. Sergius Silus. 116-115 BC.
Silver “Brockage” Denarius, 3.61 g., 16 mm. Rome mint.
Obv. Helmeted head of Roma right; mark of value to left.
Rev. Incuse of obverse.
Crawford 286/1; Sydenham 534; Sergia 1.
NGC graded FINE, Strike 3/5, Surface 3/5, “brockage”. A characteristic error of hand-struck coinage, a brockage occurs when a coin remains stuck in the punch die after it was minted, and creates an inverse image of its obverse as the punch is used once again to produce a new coin.
