$875.00

ROMAN EMPIRE. PROVINCIAL ISSUE OF ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT, UNDER AURELIAN AND VABALATHUS (AD 270-275).
Billon brockage tetradrachm, 9.78 g, 19 mm, dated Regnal Year 5 (AD 271/2).
Obv. Head of Vabalthus right L-E (date) in fields.
Rev. Incuse of obverse.
Emmett 3914.
Ex “Morris” (Phil Peck) Collection, seemingly acquired from Tommy Tesoriero ca. 1971; Peck’s notations cite J.G. Milne, author of Catalogue of Alexandrian Coins: “brockages in the Alexandrian series are almost never found” and adds “probably unique.”.
NGC graded XF STAR, Strike 3/5, Surface 3/5, “brockage,” extremely rare for the series, likely a unique error for Aurelian & Vabalathus.
