SICILY. Siculo-Punic Issue imitating Sicilian coinage, attributed to Lilybaion (as ‘Cape of Melkart’).
Silver Tetradrachm, 17.13 g., 26 mm. Ca. 350-300 BC.
Obv. Nike crowning charioteer driving quadriga right, caduceus left, RŠMLQRT (in Punic) in exergue.
Rev. Wreathed head of Arethusa right, three dolphins around.
Jenkins, Punic 38 (obv 14/rev 29) (same dies).
Formerly in the collection of a Swiss lawyer and purchased sometime ca. 1980s – early 1990s, ex Numismatica Ars Classica 92, 5/24/2016, lot 1432 = Schweizerischer Bankverein 25, 9/19/1990, lot 59
NGC graded as CHOICE XF STAR, Surface 5/5, Strike 5/5, wonderfully struck with old cabinet toning.
