Obv. ЄIPINH ЬASILISSH, bust of Irene facing, wearing crown with pendilia, loros, holding globus cruciger and scepter with cross. Rev. ЄIPINH ЬASILISSH Θ, bust of Irene as on obverse.
Sear 1599.
NGC graded CHOICE AU, Strike 5/5, Surface 4/5, a coin struck during Irene’s sole reign, the first instance in the Byzantine empire when a woman had complete imperial power. Her short reign lasted five years, after which the empress lost support and was exiled.
