18335. ROMAN IMPERATORIAL. JULIUS CAESAR, 44 BC.
Silver denarius, 3.68 g, 19 mm. Lifetime issue struck by P. Sepullius Macer at Rome, Feb-March 44 BC.
Obv. CAE[SAR DI]CT PERPETVO, laureate and veiled head of Caesar right. Rev. [P SEP]VLLIVS MACER, Venus standing left, holding Victoria and scepter, shield at her feet.
Crawford, 480/13; Sydenham, 1074.
NGC graded CHOICE VF, Strike 2/5, Surface 4/5, struck slightly off center on obverse but with a very attractive portrait of Julius Caesar. The coin was minted about one month prior to Caesar’s murder, this issue probably fueled the conspiracy whereby Caesar styles himself “Dictator Forever”.
