LYDIA ELECTRUM TRITE ( 1/3 STATER ) – SCARCE EMISSION WITH ROYAL NAME WALVET – XF NGC GRADED GREEK LYDIAN KINGDOM COIN (Inv. 16960)
KINGDOM OF LYDIA. Walwet, ca. 620-560 BC.
Electrum Trite (1/3 stater), 4.74 g, 12 mm.
Obv. Head of roaring lion left, [WALWET] at left in retrograde Lydian script (right part of a larger die that included two confronted lion heads)
Rev. Pair of incuse punches.
Weidauer Group XVII, 93-94.
NGC graded XF, Strike 4/5, Surface 4/5. The obverse dies for this coinage featured two facing lion heads with the inscription between these. However, the dies were too large for the planchets used so that normally only one head of the lion could be accommodated during striking (either the right facing one, or the left facing one). The present piece was struck with the left part of the die that shows the lion facing right toward the inscription, only small traces of which are preserved.
