Gold pentadrachm (trichryson), 17.83 g, 24 mm. Issue of Alexandria, ca. 275-272 BC.
Obv. Diademed bust of Ptolemy I right, with aegis around neck. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΠTOΛEMAIOY, eagle standing left on thunderbolt, Σ monogram above Galatian shield in left field, ΔI control monogram in right field.
CPE, 304; Svoronos, 551 (listing 5 specimens).
Ex CNG Triton XX, 1/10/2017, lot 380 = CNG 53, 3/15/2000, lot 694 = Marian Sinton Collection, Triton III, 11/30/1999, lot 651.
NGC graded AU, Strike 4/5, Surface 3/5, “graffito”, an attractive and bright specimen, the graffito an interesting monogram ΠO in reverse upper right field. According to Lorber’s arrangement this is the final gold issue of the Galatian shield emissions of Ptolemy II.
