Bronze follis, 10.10 g, 25 mm. Issue of Constantinople, attributed to the reign of Romanus IV, AD 1068-1071 (Class G).
Obv. IC-XC, facing bust of Christ Pantocrator. Rev. Bust of the Virgin orans, facing, MP-ΘV in fields.
Sear 1867.
NGC graded AU, Strike 5/5, Surface 4/5, a coin with pleasing portraits of both Jesus Christ and the Virgin. The Virgin orans (the Virgin in Prayer) is one of the great images of Orthodox Christianity and there is a well-known mosaic depiction of this subject in the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kyiv.
