LOCRI EPIZEPHYRII SILVER STATER – ISSUE LACKING THE CITY’S NAME – GOOD VF GREEK BRUTTIUM COIN (Inv. 19889)
$1,450.00
19889. BRUTTIUM. LOCRI EPIZEPHYRII. Ca. 350–275 BC.
Silver Stater, 8.62 g, 22 mm.
Obv. Pegasus flying left, thunderbolt below. Rev. Head of Athena left, wearing Corinthian helmet.
Cf. Pegasi 13; HN Italy 2342; HGC 1, 1574, all of which include the legend.
Ex Central Texas Collection, acquired from Nilus Coins, inv. 30535, with his ticket.
Good VF, dark gray toning in areas. A very unusual issue where the city’s abbreviated name (ΛΟΚΡΩΝ) is not indicated on the reverse of the coin, although the presence of the thunderbolt and the style leave no doubt as to where it was minted. This is further substantiated by the style of the dies that are the work of the same artist responsible for a specimen formerly in the Pozzi and Lockett collections: Pozzi Collection 1731 = SNG Lockett 2210.
