$1,500.00
20099. ISLAND OF AEGINA. Ca. 525–480 BC.
Silver Stater, 11.96 g, 21 mm.
Obv. Sea turtle with shell showing a thick collar, its beaked head turned left [square countermark with skew pattern applied on shell]. Rev. Punch with skew pattern.
Meadows, Group IIb; HGC 6, 430.
NGC graded CHOICE FINE, Strike 4/5, Surface 3/5, “countermark.” Countermarks applied to the turtle’s shell are a common feature on Aegina turtle staters. This countermark is particularly interesting in that it is appears to show the same pattern as on the reverse punch that struck the coin.
