This coin originally belonged to the coin collection formed by John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States (1825-1829), and his heirs. The vast collection was donated to the Massachusetts Historical Society by his grandson Henry Adams in 1913, but due to the insufficient space for display or storage at the institution it was sold at auction by Stack’s in 1971.
