EASTERN CELTS SILVER TETRADRACHM OF PHILIP II TYPE EX FLESCHE COLLECTION AND PUBLISHED IN EXHIBITION CATALOGUE – CHOICE VF NGC GRADED GREEK COIN (Inv. 20957)

$1,350.00

20957. CELTS OF EASTERN EUROPE. 3rd–2nd centuries BC.
Silver Tetradrachm imitating a Philip II posthumous issue from Amphipolis, 13.06 g, 24 mm.
Obv. Laureate head of Zeus right. Rev. ΦIΛIΠ–ΠO, nude rider holding palm branch right, facing bucranium below horse, stylized wreath below horse’s leg.
Published: Bernward Ziegaus, Kelten geld: münzen der Kelten und angrenzender nichtgriechischer Völkerschaften; Sammlung Christian Flesche (Staatliche Münzsammlung München, 2010), no. 650 (this coin).
NGC graded CHOICE VF, Strike 5/5, Surface 4/5, a particularly rare imitation, exhibited at the Staatliche Münzsammlung München and published in the accompanying exhibition catalogue.

This imitation appears to be based on a rare emission of Amphipolis with a facing bull head beneath the horse: Le Rider, Amphipolis IV, pl. 47, 40, with a Λ above a bucranium below the horse and an elaborate wreath with monogram in lower right field. The imitation simplified the design, omitting the lambda and reducing the wreath to a circle surrounded by dots.
