$1,200.00
21090. MYSIA. CYZICUS. Ca. 550–450 BC.
Electrum Hecte, 2.62 g, 11 mm.
Obv. Griffin protome left, tunny in left field. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square.
Von Fritze 102.
NGC graded CHOICE FINE, Strike 2/5, Surface 3/5, “countermarks,” “double struck with rotation,” countermarks on edge.
This highly interesting error is a rotated double strike. The obverse die is also documented in a specimen from UBS Auction 63, 9/6/2005, lot 163 which allows for comparison with the convoluted appearance on this specimen. The lower part of the originally struck design (the griffin’s lower part, feet and tunny) appears substantially rotated below the second impression, creating a truly impressive abstract image.
