Oenoanda was a city with a long history extending back to the Bronze Age, when it was known as Wiyanawanda to the Hittites. Its name means “city of vines/wine,” alluding to the viticultural industry of the city’s hinterland. This meaning of the city’s name is advertised on this coin by the grape bunch in the field. The city struck very few coins that were virtually unknown until a small group appeared on the market and was published in 2005 by Richard Ashton. It remains a seldom-seen coin type.
