This type of Corinthian “colt” stater was probably struck as pay for northwestern Greek mercenaries serving in the armies of Philip II, Alexander the Great, and their immediate successors. Such mercenaries traditionally expected payment with coins of the Corinthian weight standard and featuring the long–established types of the city.
