MAURICE TIBERIUS GOLD SOLIDUS – TRIPLE STRIKE ERROR – CHOICE XF NGC GRADED BYZANTINE COIN (Inv. 20969)

$1,800.00

20968. BYZANTINE EMPIRE. MAURICE TIBERIUS, AD 582–602.
Gold Solidus, 4.44 g, 24 mm. Issue of Constantinople, officina Θ.
Obv. O N mAVRC TIB PP AVC, helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust facing, holding globus cruciger. Rev. VICTORIA AVCC Θ, angel standing, facing, holding staff with staurogram and globus cruciger, CONOB in exergue.
Sear 478.
NGC graded CHOICE XF, Strike 5/5, Surface 2/5, “bent,” “light marks,” “die shift,” a triple strike resulting in an attractive, well centered coin, on a medallic planchet.

The coin appears to be a well–struck specimen intended to correct a previous double strike. Traces of the previous two strikes appear on the obverse right edge, the first strike barely discernible on the circular border of the coin, the second strike replicating the legend and part of the imperial bust, including the fibula, at the bottom. The final bust, carefully centered, obliterates most of the previous irregular strikes, yielding a very attractive coin.
