ALEXANDER THE GREAT GOLD CLAD SILVER STATER – IMITATIVE ISSUE – EF GREEK OR CELTIC COIN (Inv. 21273)

Sold

21195. KINGDOM OF MACEDON. ALEXANDER III, THE GREAT, 336–323 BC.
Imitative Fourrée Stater with gold clad over a silver core, 4.61 g, 18 mm. Based on a posthumous issue of Lampsacus, ca. 310–301 BC
Obv. Head of Athena right, wearing large Corinthian helmet with snake ornament below the plume. Rev. ΣWCΞ<II>K, Nike standing, her hair gathered in a topknot, looking left, holding wreath in right hand and stylis, buckle in left field, A below left wing.
Cf. Price 1374 for the model.
Ex CNG Electronic Auction 364, 12/2/2015, Lot 451.
EF, numerous breaks in the gold cladding reveal the silver core. This is a very unusual fourrée in that it uses a high value silver core instead of the bronze normally used in such imitations. Furthermore, it is clearly an imitative issue as the legend is entirely garbled suggesting the engraver had no knowledge of Greek, and the control monogram an ΛΩ on the original is simplified as an A.
