Obv. Helmeted, nude hoplite marching right, holding shield and spear. Rev. ΕΣT, triskeles, lion left below, all within incuse square.

VF, overstruck over a stater of Samos, ca. 460–430 BC, the Samian undertype struck from the same dies as the illustrated example from a recent Obolos sale.

Trace of the undertype’s obverse, the mane of the lion skin, appears on the periphery of the obverse, while the distinctive laurel branch of the undertype’s design is clearly seen on the reverse. For another such overstrike ex Themis Numismatics, 4/9/2021, lot 161; see listing 21790 in the online database of Greek overstrikes, KBR. Most remarkable is that on the present coin there are enough traces left to enable the very dies that struck the Samos undertype as shown by the illustrated parallel.
