This countermark, with the initials of George II, was applied in Jamaica to Spanish milled dollars to standardize the value of these coins for the local circulation which soon stabilized at 6s/8p. The original intent was to countermark £100,000 but only about £12,000 were processed before the authorities in London decided that the Governor did not have the authority to approve the project and repealed the act in 1759. Given that only a small number of coins were finally countermarked, they are elusive and highly sought after, especially among collectors of Jamaica’s coinage.
