ACRAGAS SILVER DIDRACHM – RARE VARIETY WITH HUMAN-LIKE FACE ON CRAB – VF NGC GRADED GREEK SICILY COIN (Inv. 20958)

$1,750.00

20958. SICILY. ACRAGAS. Ca. 510–495 BC.
Silver Didrachm, 8.81 g, 19 mm. Issue of 488/85–480/78 BC.
Obv. AKRA–CAΣ (retrograde), eagle with folded wings standing left. Rev. Crab with face–like pattern on shell.
Westermark, Akragas, 164 (O68/R111), possibly 164.5 (“Formerly Private Collection, Germany,” which has the same weight).
Ex Numismatik Naumann 157, 10/5/2025, lot 43.
NGC graded VF, Strike 5/5, Surface 2/5, “marks,” old collection toning and an interesting graffito (XAN?) below the crab.

This didrachm of Acragas is an extremely rare die combination (five other specimens in market records from the last 25 years), where the reverse shows a human–like face on the crab’s carapace. The obverse die, Westermark’s O68, is also unusual in the way the retrograde legend is divided.
