This specimen shows a recut control that has not been noticed in the literature before. Neither SC nor Le Rider note it, even though specimens of the recut are occasionally encountered. It appears that the KAT control seen on this die is recut over an earlier monogram employing either an alpha or mu as principal element. A similar recut control is recorded for SC 571.2 in the outer right controls, suggesting that the mint had to adjust dies in a hurry to meet the production schedule.
