Gold Stater, 8.53 g, 17 mm. POSTHUMOUS issue of Tyre, dated to the 33rd regnal year of Azemilkos (317/6 BC).
Obv. Head of Athena right, wearing large Corinthian helmet with coiled snake ornament below the plume. Rev. AΛEΞANΔ[POY], Nike standing, looking to left, holding wreath and stylis over left shoulder, ||| -= ЧO (date and Phoenician for Azelmikos) in left field.

NGC XF, Strike 5/5, Surface 4/5, exceptionally rare with this rendering of the date as market records list only three other specimens and the Pella database only one (the Berlin specimen cited above).

Among the most interesting coins of Alexander the Great are the dated issues of Tyre and Ake. Exceptionally, these coins bear dates on a local regnal calendar rendered in Phoenician script. This very interesting variety was attributed to Ake by Newell and Price, but recent scholarship has attributed these emissions to Tyre, whose regnal era dates the coin to 317/316 BC. This coin is remarkable in that it has the entire date clearly and completely preserved.
