Claudius is perhaps one of the best–known emperors in modern times thanks to the PBS television series “I, Claudius.” A very learned man, said to have read Etruscan, Claudius was proclaimed emperor after the murder of Caligula. On this coin, with two imperial portraits, we see the portrait of his wife Agrippina the Younger, who was his niece and a prominent member of the Julio–Claudian family. She was the mother of Nero and is said to have poisoned Claudius so that her son could claim the imperial throne.
