DATAMES SILVER STATER – CLEAR OVERSTRIKE OVER A SIDE ATHENA/APOLLO STATER – CHOICE EF TARSUS CILICIA GREEK COIN (Inv. 21440)
$1,650.00
21440. CILICIA, TARSUS. DATAMES (AS SATRAP), ca. 385/4–362/1 BC.
Silver Stater, 10.38 g, 26 mm. Issue of ca. 380 BC. Overstruck on a stater of Side.
Obv. Female head facing, hair gathered in an ampyx, wearing necklace. Rev. [Baal] in Phoenician, bearded male head right, wearing helmet (Ares?).
Casabonne Type 1; Moysey Issue 4; SNG BN 258–70.
Good EF, overstruck on a Side stater whose undertype is clearly visible, a rectangular countermark with a bull applied at bottom. The Side undertype, cf. Atlan 114 for very similar dies, depicts a standing Athena holding a Nike and a pomegranate at left, all clearly visible on the obverse here, while traces of the standing Apollo appear on the reverse, notably his flattened legs and parts of the legend (…ΣΥΩ…) on the right. A very rare and seldom-encountered overstrike.
