GREAT BRITAIN GOLD SOVEREIGN – 1821 FIRST YEAR ISSUE EX S.B. PULASKI SHIPWRECK – AU55 NGC SHIPWRECK CERTIFICATION WORLD COIN (Inv. 20835)

$6,250.00

20835. GREAT BRITAIN. GEORGE IV, 1820-1830.
Gold Sovereign, 1821, FIRST YEAR OF ISSUE. Mint of London.
KM 682.
AU55 NGC “S.B. PULASKI” NGC Shipwreck Certification label, an extremely rare provenance, with only one other sovereign from the shipwreck on CoinArchives (this is also a George IV sovereign but in AU53).

Sometimes called the “Titanic of its Time,” steamboat S.B. Pulaski sunk off the coast of North Carolina on June 14, 1838 as it was heading from Savannah to Baltimore. The ship’s boiler exploded during the night, and the ship rapidly sunk, killing more than half of the 200 people on board. Those that survived remained in the water for up to two days before they could be rescued. The wreck was located in 2018, and several gold and silver pieces were brought up, likely pocket pieces belonging to the unfortunate passengers that were lost in the disaster.
