Silver Tetradrachm, 16.87 g, 29 mm. Issue of ca. 250 BC.
Obv. Head of deified Alexander the Great right, with the horn of Ammon. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΛΥΣIMAXO (sic !), Athena enthroned left, holding Nike crowning Lysimachus’ name, thunderbolt in left field, tunny left in exergue.
SNG BN 2519; Müller 328; CNG E-361, lot 727 (same obv. die, with the normal spelling of the king’s name).
NGC VF, Strike 5/5, Surface 4/5, extremely rare variety with the engraver’s error, one of two pieces attested so far.
This is an exceedingly rare engraver’s error in which the final letter Y of the royal name was not engraved. Only one other specimen (CNG E-568, lot 89, same dies) has the error, while another piece (CNG E-361, lot 727, same obverse die) employs a reverse with the complete spelling of Lysimachus’ name. It’s likely the engraver miscalculated the space requirements on this particular die and could not fit the final letter as he completed his work.
