Frederick J. Woodbridge had a long and distinguished career as an architect, beginning his training with the legendary firm McKim, Mead and White. In 1951–52 he was on a Fulbright Scholarship at the American Academy in Rome, and perhaps it was during this time that his enthusiasm for ancient coins prospered. He also served as architect at the excavations of Antioch in Pisidia, Turkey, as well as at Carthage in Tunisia. Woodbridge was active in teaching and was associated with Colombia University during most of his career. He passed away in 1974 and his collection, including this piece, was auctioned off by Sotheby’s the following year.
